South Tyndale Railway – Ride then Stride
Join us on Saturday 11th May in Alston for a delightful train journey to Slaggyford and then a 6 mile guided walk through South Tynedale
back to Alston.
You can expect great views of the river and surrounding dales from both the train journey and also the walk, and the walk will also visit the little church at Kirkhaugh with its unique “needle” Spire. There will be plenty of great views, tranquillity and wildlife to spot (potentially deer and red squirrels) plus bird song to be enjoyed as we both ride and then walk through the scenic South Tynedale.
The terrain on the walk will be varied but relatively gentle. We will use quiet lanes and field paths, there will be a couple of short steep but stepped descents. A number of stiles must also be negotiated along the route. The footpaths may be muddy in places and so the wearing of walking boots or shoes is essential. As the weather in South Tynedale can be very mixed, you should bring waterproofs with you.
The pace of the walk will be relaxed and we will take plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the views. We will also stop for a lunch break and so you should bring your own packed lunch plus plenty to drink.
Unfortunately, on this walk we will not be able to allow dogs as we will be walking through farm land where there will be ewes with young lambs and ground nesting birds and we do not wish to cause them any undue stress.
On the day you should arrive at Alston railway station by 10.15. You will be met on the Platform by the Walk Team and we will then catch the 10.30 departure, taking in the superb views from the train as it makes it way to Slaggyford. Although booking is advised, you are also welcome to turn up on the day.
We get off the train at Slaggyford, and if you wish you can purchase a drink and cake from the Little Buffet Car or you can just watch the train prepare for its departure back to Alston.
Once the train has departed, we will commence the 6 mile guided walk back to Alston and we aim to arrive back at Alston station by 3pm.
The walk will be guided by an experienced walking team and they will point out sites of interest on the route and also try to answer any question that you may have about either the Railway or the area.
Please note the route walked may be altered on the day if there are adverse weather conditions.
The cost of this “Ride then Stride” event is £10 for an adult and £5 for a child (under 18). All children must be accompanied by an adult.
