We’re very excited to announce that train enthusiasts can now book a footplate experience to drive and fire one of our heritage steam locomotives.
What better way to spend a day than travelling through the scenic South Tyne Valley in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with those nostalgic steam loco smells and sounds around you and your eyes on the tracks ahead?
There are three tempting experiences to choose from; a steam footplate taster, a steam footplate experience day where participants will join the steam crew taking a turn at firing and driving, and a railway experience where as well as taking a turn on the footplate, participants will also act as a guard and learn to operate the signals too.
Janis Goodfellow General Manager said;
“This is such an exciting development for our railway. The Naklo restoration project, funded by the Power to Change Trust is almost complete and with her wide cab Naklo is the perfect loco for participants to join our fantastic volunteer crew and have a great steam footplate experience.”
Naklo is due to be relaunched this summer and will join the unique wood burning locomotive, Green Dragon, in regular traffic at the Railway. Full details of Naklo’s special relaunch day will be announced in due course.
The steam experience packages will run from July but all three experiences are available to pre-book now and gift vouchers are available too.
Alan Farrar, Chair of the South Tynedale Railway Preservation Society said;
“With the Naklo project now nearing completion, we shall soon be able to offer a greatly enhanced experience for our passengers, something I have been looking forward to for a number of years.
