South Tynedale Railway, Alston, is pulling out all the stops this August Bank Holiday with a “Steam Oddities” weekend! We’ve added a puff of steam to the themes for each day.
On “Odds & Sods Saturday” (27 August) we’re going loco with many of the working fleet being brought out of the sheds, whether to run along the line, pose for photos or parade along the sidings. As a special treat, Thomas Edmondson will be alongside the platform, between timetabled trains, for you to take your photo on the footplate!
Have you heard of ‘Steampunk’? There’s a huge following for this trend – call it Victorian Sci-Fi (think Jules Verne and Philip Pullman); we are hosting some fans on “Steampunk Sunday” … expect extraordinary costumes, Victorian martial arts, tea dueling and stalls selling steampunk clothing, jewellery and oddities.
“Family Fun Monday” rounds off the weekend with plenty of children’s activities – lawn games, a steampunk teddy bear hunt, Dr. Who’s den and crafts… plus traditional clog dancers! Whichever day you visit there’ll be music and plenty to do as well as, of course, train rides! Don’t forget a visit to the café where Shirley will be offering an additional ‘steampunk’ menu – can you resist orange & poppy-seed or gin & tonic cake?
